World Thinking Day at Singapore Indoor Stadium |
World Thinking Day 2008
Thinking Day is a special day when Girl Scouts and Girl Guides all around the world think of each other and give thanks and appreciation to their "sister" Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, as well as to think about the meaning of Guiding. It is held on the 22nd of February, which marks the birthdays of Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell and of Olave Baden-Powell, his wife and World Chief Guide. This year's Thinking Day has been especially memorable and exciting for me.
As I rushed through the open doors in the Indoor Stadium, I was greeted by a rush of cold air and the wide smiles of the Girl Guides ushers. Azurah and Jiayi, the Company Leaders of the Zhenghua Guides, walked hastily in front of me, frantically looking for the registration booth. We finally found the area where the prize receivers of various schools were supposed to assemble. Giving a sigh of relief, we sank down to our seats and waited for the Thinking Day Celebrations to start. Girl Guides from the various schools in Singapore started to arrive and take their seats, some of them even practising their school cheers or just chatting among themselves.
We started off by singing a few popular Girl Guides songs like 'Cannibal King', 'Maboleh' and 'Edelweiss'. As the President of Girl Guide Singapore, Mrs Joy Balakrishnan, walked into the stadium, every Guide stood and cheered the 'B.P. Welcome Yell'. At 3pm, Mrs S. R. Nathan arrived and once again, every Guide stood up and sang the Welcome Song for her. It was truly a spectacular sight as every Guide stood and sang in unison.
After the long Thinking Day and Girl Guide speeches, it was finally time to receive the various different prizes from Mrs. S.R. Nathan herself. I walked out proudly and shook her hand when my school was announced the champion for the Guides Banner Competition. We had beaten 74 other banners that were submitted by the various schools in Singapore. It was worth the hard work and late afternoons when my fellow guides and I had to stay back in school to finish up the banner. It was truly an honour to receive the prize on behalf of my school's Girl Guide unit.
Thinking Day 2008 was truly an eventful ceremony. Since it was my first time receiving an award from Mrs S. R. Nathan herself, I felt really excited and nervous at the same time. I breathed a sigh of relief when the whole event was finally over. It has been a great day.
