MY TRIP TO PULAU UBIN
By Siti Rahayu - Kingfisher Patrol

On the 2nd February 2008, I went to Pulau Ubin with my fellow guides. We had to gather at the bus bay before heading to the Changi jetty. We were all wearing our half-uniforms and were prepared to go. After a long time sitting in the bus we finally arrived at the jetty. My hands were cold and clammy as it had been a long time since I have taken a bum-boat.

My friends and I were in one group. There were about seven of us including the teacher-in-charge. After we settled down and started our journey to Pulau Ubin, one of my friends started to feel uncomfortable and nauseous. I tried to comfort her and said to her that everything would be fine. She then grabbed my hands tightly.

Finally, we reached our destination safely. The teachers gave us the instructions on what we had to do and what to be cautious of when we were walking around the island. We were asked to take photographs of any seven things that we would consider nice or beautiful. After which, we had to print the photographs out in the 4R size and submit them to the teacher-in-charge to get a Photography badge.

As some of us would be riding the bicycles, while others preferred to walk to the destination which was "Chek Jawa", we were split into two groups. It took between one to two hours just to travel to our destination. We took such a long time that we have little time to rest. I had to stop for every 5 to 7 minutes just to catch my breath. The mosquitoes there were like killing machines; my legs were full with mosquito bites which haven’t healed till this day. For the first time, I saw a mudskipper in real life. I always wanted to see it. The view at ‘Chek Jawa’ was amazing; it is so relaxing and fun at the same time.

There are people who actually live in Pulau Ubin. There are kampongs and wild dogs, but most of them have owners. At Chek Jawa, there is a small cottage that provides information that educates visitors on the marine life in Pulau Ubin. Some of these amazing creatures cannot be found in mainland Singapore.

The view there was heart-melting though the journey was arduous. After absorbing the beautiful and amazing views, I was just about to lay my tired feet to rest when it was time to head back to the Pulau Ubin jetty. This time round, it took us just forty-five minutes to reach it - much faster than the time taken to reach Chek Jawa - as we were go downhill most of the time.

While waiting for the bum-boat to head back to Changi jetty, we had some time to buy refreshments near the Pulau Ubin jetty. By then, the hunger pangs struck again, even though we had all been given a burger each earlier. It must have been all that exercise!

Across the waters, we soon found ourselves onboard the bus. The return trip was long, but it gave us time to reflect on the memorable trip. I had fun with my fellow guides and I hope to embark on more of such trips.
